Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback Therapy gives the individual a tool with which to change the level of various types of electrical activity in the brain, which may be functioning abnormally. Studies have shown that once the brain learns to regulate itself, it continues to do so. The brain is amazingly adaptable and capable of learning. Research has shown that in treating disorders, biology must be addressed for treatment to be effective and long-lasting. It is a non-invasive technique for effectively treating a variety of conditions such as:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Aspergers Syndrome
  • ADD/HD
  • Depression
  • Addiction
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Anxiety
  • Trauma

Research has shown that individuals with ADD/ADHD have excessive slow brain waves (theta) and not enough fast wave activity (beta) during activities requiring concentration. Neurofeedback Therapy trains individuals to increase beta and decrease theta activity in order to normalize the brain wave activity associated with primary ADD/ADHD.

This natural approach provides the brain with a better, more efficient pattern for normal functioning, resulting in decreased symptoms of ADD/ADHD and other neurological based disorders. Better grades and improved relationships provide rapid boost of self-esteem.

  • Results of Treatment May Include:
  • Improved learning and listening skills
  • Improved behavior and school grades
  • Improved ability to follow through on tasks
  • Improved social skills
  • Improved communication skills
  • Enhanced self-esteem
  • Significant improvements in IQ and achievement scores
  • Reduction or elimination of medication

How is Neurofeedback Therapy Done?
Training is accomplished by utilizing a computer-based EEG monitoring system that processes signals from the brain and gives the individual immediate feedback by means of video displays and auditory responses. EEG Neurofeedback Therapy is a painless, non-invasive procedure. Gradually the brain responds to cues that are given and a learning of new brain wave patterns takes place. This new pattern is one that is closer to what is normally observed in individuals without such symptoms. All of the disorders listed show up in the EEG in some way. By making this information available to the brain, and showing it how to make adjustments, it will do so.

Brain Retraining?
Re-training the brain creates neuro-physiological changes which in turn impacts a variety of disorders. This has been proven through multiple research studies and pre/post outcomes studies. As individuals learn how to strengthen their own brain, they produce new, healthier patterns to replace the old, unstable neurological patterns. By concentrating on the video screen the individual is able to play video games by manipulating his/her brainwaves utilizing visual and auditory feedback. In a sense it is like taking your brain to the gym and giving it a workout. Research has shown that once the brain learns to regulate itself, it continues to do so.

How many sessions?
Neurofeedback Therapy is complementary to other types of treatment, including medication. Many individuals notice results in 8-10 sessions. The number of sessions depends on the type of disorder and the severity of the disorder. Sessions usually last 20-30 minutes and are tailored to meet each individual’s therapeutic needs. For Neurofeedback therapy to be successful, treatment should be comprehensive and therapeutic.
