Deer Valley Campus Life

The Deer Valley Campus sits among 1,000 acres of old-growth forest, rolling hills and meandering creeks in rural Perry County, Tennessee, just a few miles from the Tennessee River. This natural setting provides many outdoor treatment settings, removing these youth from the distractions of city life and helping them focus entirely on their treatment goals.

A flowing stream helps create a picturesque setting for the nature paths, which wind throughout the campus. Boys live in residential cabins that are perched on a hillside not far from the dining/activities center and counseling services building.

Each cottage houses 10-12 boys who are placed according to age, diagnosis and functioning level. Children who are placed into the same group become close friends, and share a daily routine. They room in the same cottage, attend the same classroom and eat meals together to form a tightly knit group.

In the afternoons, counselors conduct group therapy and life skills lessons. Life skills may include topics such as how to launder clothes, cook a balanced meal, use the phone book, plan an outing, open a bank account, address a letter and other important skills that all children need to know. Through group therapy, the children work collaboratively on their goals and hold one another accountable for their actions.

At Youth Villages, families are supported in making changes that will help ensure long-term success for the child and family at home. Family therapy is a key component of treatment. Whenever possible, children are returned home quickly with Youth Villages’ intensive in-home counseling. The campus provides a family-friendly atmosphere with family therapy and visitation rooms as well as outdoor areas for visits and picnics.
